Janet Goliger’s book I need to be SAFE: I’m worth it! is a “must” read for all kids and parents. She covers both the mental and physical aspects of dealing with potentially threatening situations and she uses true stories, possible scenarios, and photographs to get her message across. Her objective is simple: she wants to keep our children safe! Highly Recommended!

“I Need To Be Safe” is featured at our Authors’ Coalition booth at the LA Times/UCLA Festival of Books. Particpating authors send their books to me before the event. That’s the setup. I have work to do. And I can’t get to it because I open Janet Goliger’s package first. Her book is full of information that fearful parents need to teach their kids, but it is likely this is information the parents themselves need. Almost all of us know someone who has been mugged. How much better each of them would have been had they read this book, even cursorily. I can’t put it down.
You’ll learn about awareness and exactly what to do if you’re being followed by a car or on foot. You’ll learn about identifying suspicious strangers. But most of all, you’ll love the fully illustrated (photos) of ways to fight off an attack.
One of the things we need to remember as parents is that not all attackers are adults. Bullying has been targeted in the press as a big problem in and around schools and schoolyards. The other, of course, is that we are ourselves are not immune to an attack. We need to be responsible for ourselves and for our children and that does not mean merely warning kids which often only teaches them to be fearul. It is more responsible (though I didn’t do this for my kids) to set an example for them. It means giving them the tools to be confident.
Confidence? After only leafing through this book (well, OK, after thinking I would leaf through it and spending a much longer time studying the steps of self-defense!), I feel surer that I will not be a victim myself. And I intend to spread the word to young girls and boys, other women and, yes, men, too.

I Need to be SAFE: I’m Worth It! arrived in my mail box and I wondered how one is to review a book like this. This is a book that isn’t read just one time and then put down, it needs to be practiced, memorized and saved for further study. I can actually see keeping a copy in the car, school or church library.
Self-defense is more important today than ever. Although this book is written for teaching children, there are many things that adults should learn and master. The reality is that in today’s world there is more violence. Since violent crimes happen unexpectedly, learning self-defense, as well as awareness of our surroundings and becoming confident in that knowledge, could save people from bodily harm, injury or worse. The self confidence learned from each exercise will also help children dealing with bullies, evaluating a threatening situation or even over coming low self-esteem.
Author, Janet Goliger, is the creator and owner of the C.L.A.S.S. Self-Defense Program. (Children Learning Awareness, Safety and Self-Defense). Much of the book is dedicated to self-defense, but much of it teaches awareness, which is important in learning to avoid potentially dangerous situations. The book teaches how not to be a victim. The considerable content is well organized and therefore easily referenced. The photos are extremely helpful in showing the self-defense moves.
Ms. Goliger writes, “I am often asked what is the best way to teach children not to go to strangers. I tell parents the same thing every time: Be honest with your children. You don’t need to be graphic, but you do need to give them some real facts.”
I highly recommend this book to parents, teachers, women and coaches wishing to make the lives of our children safer. Our children are our greatest asset and Ms. Goliger gives us the tools to protect them.
