Bright From the Start: The Simple, Science-Backed Way to Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind fromBirth to Age 3

Should I really read to my baby? Is all TV bad, or only some TV? What kind of toys do babies need? Can teaching a baby sign language really boost IQ? How should my caregiver be stimulating my baby? Should I pipe classical music into the nursery?

New parents are often overwhelmed with information and advice, and in an effort to give their babies the best chances in life they buy DVDs, CDs, toys, and gear all meant to make them smarter. As co-founder of New Directions Institute for Infant Brain Development, Dr. Jill Stamm knows what most parents and child caregivers suspect: the way we care for a very young child’s developing brain has the power to shape and influence many… More >>

Great book. The author backs up her recommendations with references to scientific studies. She also makes some recommendations that aren’t (yet) backed by science but more her observations in many years of working in the field. She provides specific recommendations both for parents who will be raising their children at home as well as those that need to put their children in daycare at an early age.

A wonderful book/reference. Highly recommend to any parent. Especially liked how the activities to do with your child were broken down into different months and consolidated at the end of chapters.

My little one was a few weeks old when I found this book. I was looking for concrete methods of stimulating my little one’s brain which were based on scientific evidence. I found this book easy to read with great examples. It takes you through each concept clearly, easily and without any gimicky jargon. It explains some complex ideas very thoroughly and in a way anyone can understand. This book also is full of great ideas of what you can be doing with your child so that you are being an interactive parent, not a reactive one. ALL NEW PARENTS SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!

New moms have abundant sources of child care reads – I have gone through at least 4 baby books myself – and they seemed to be all but a wash until I came across Dr Stamm’s book. It finally helped answer the question of “why” on all the baby advice I had been bombarding myself with. The book helps you understand things that as an emotionally and physically stable mom you are naturally doing. It is things like – why spend time with your child without the presence of a TV or computer screen, why roll around on the floor with the baby instead of strapping him/her in a swing or a jumper for hours on end, why take time to pick your child’s caregivers, and more. It helped me understand why and how being an attentive parent who follows her instincts and minimizes distractions translates into a happier, brighter, more focused child.

Dr Stamm’s book helps raise the parent just as much as the child but in a way that is non-judgmental and very understanding of the pressures most of us are under. Dr Stamm has a very compelling story as a parent and it is her story and the stories of her children that inspired me to read and learn.

I can only thank these three women – Dr Stamm and her two daughters for dedicating their work and lives to the needs and development of little babies and toddlers who cannot yet stand up for themselves :)

Buy this book today. Don’t wait. This book is by far the BEST and MOST RESEARCHED book on infant care through age 3 that I’ve read – and will give you both the “why’s” and “how to’s” of raising a child who will be receptive to learning later in life. It takes a close look at brain development – and will show you why various parenting techniques should be employed…or avoided. Because of how the brain develops, it gives you a sense of urgency to start incorporating its recommendations as early as possible. It is also chock full of specific developmental games you can play and books you can read with your kids (grouped by age). I was so thrilled to find this book while my son was so young (9 weeks). I’ve read so many parenting books – and nothing has come close to making me feel equipped to parent my newborn during these critical early years as Dr. Stamm’s book.
